About us

WHO ARE WE?

Fundraising for better healthcare since 1949

We are fundraisers actively working for even better healthcare on the St. Margaret’s Hospital site in Epping, Essex.

Formed in 1949 – a year after the birth of the National Health Service – we have been raising money for expensive equipment that the NHS budget is unable to meet.

WHAT DO WE HELP?

The modern new hospital – the Epping Forest Unit and the Mental Health Unit on the St. Margaret’s Site.

WHO DO WE HELP?

The patients in the Epping Forest Unit: Plane, Poplar and Beech Wards, and out-patients in departments such as physiotherapy. We also help the patients in Kitwood, Roding and Wards in the Mental Healthy Unit – and all the staff who care for them.

WHY DO WE NEED TO RAISE MONEY?

We meet requests from wards and departments for items, which the NHS budget can’t provide. This helps the teams who work with convalescent patients, supporting them on their way back to health and return home.

WHERE ARE THE ST. MARGARET'S UNITS WE SUPPORT?

HOW LONG HAVE WE BEEN WORKING WITH ST. MARGARET'S?

The League of Friends of St. Margaret’s Hospital was formed in 1949 – a year after the birth of the National Health Service – when the site on The Plain in Epping housed a large acute hospital. For seventy-three years, thousands of pounds have been raised to provide medical equipment, specialist furniture and other expensive items which the NHS budget couldn’t meet.

Eighteen years ago, the old hospital buildings were demolished and two modern new buildings rose to care for patients recovering from treatment in acute medical centres and for patients needing help with mental health conditions. There are also several out-patient clinics, including provision of an exercise pool and a large gymnasium for help with recovery.

Gifts made by the Friends have ranged from £100,000 for hoists above every bed, to items for the new therapies which help patients with neurological conditions, such as stroke, bringing them back to active health.

WHAT COULD YOUR CLUB OR GROUP DO TO HELP?

Organise a fundraising event – quiz, fun run, sponsored knit, sponsored trek, bridge drive, golf day – what do you suggest?

In the last year, Epping Rotary Club organised a fantastic concert of classical and popular songs – the Friends of St. Margaret’s received a £1,000 share of the financial result. Rotary also raised over £150 from car park donations at the town show.

Epping Golf Club raised £3,079 for the Friends of St. Margaret’s with a year-long programme of fundraising events, from coffee mornings to dinner dances                          – an amazing result!

All the funds raised for the League of Friends of St. Margaret’s are used to support the Hospital – from high-tech equipment, which the NHS can’t provide, to festive cheer for patients who are in the Hospital wards at Christmas.
